How do you feel when planning your tasks for the day or week? Are you excited and eager to get started when the time comes? Do you feel motivated to check everything off your list on time? Or do you find yourself feeling stressed just thinking about it? Do you believe that you always make plans but never follow through? Are you constantly worried about the outcomes of your tasks? Have you ever given up on planning your day or week altogether?
There must be a better way to approach our lists to do!
Allah says:
.أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ (٦٣) ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ (٦٥)
Have you considered what you sow? Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so?
(Quran 58:63-64)
All glory be to Allah SWT. How beautifully our Lord has explained things and prompted us to think through these simple examples! Consider any other situations in your life and reflect on how much control you really have over the outcomes. Personally, there have been times when I received more than I expected based on the effort I put in, and in other instances, I got less than what I worked for. Looking back, I see how all these experiences connected to shape who I am today. Ultimately, Allah’s plan prevails.
Therefore, why should we get worried about the outcomes and feel pressure even before we act on our tasks? That is unreal!
Instead, we should focus on something that Allah has given us control over—the ‘seed’—what is the seed for our actions?
Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say;
" Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.
To get the most out of our to-do’s, we should focus and be cautious about our intentions!
What is the best 'Intention' we can set for our to-do’s: To Please Allah SWT
Last week, I gave a workshop at the Technical University of Eindhoven on overcoming procrastination. Alhamdulillah. I liked the audience and how energetic they were after a busy day at work and studies. May Allah reward them, protect them in whatever they do, and guide them in planning their best seeds.
I want to bring to your attention one of the analogies that we discussed about setting high aspiring intentions for our tasks. Your intentions are like potential energy, the energy of a body at rest (before taking any actions). As the height (The level of intentions) goes up, the potential energy is higher. When the body starts rolling (taking actions), the potential energy will be converted to kinetic energy (law of conservation of energy). Since the body has the same mass, the body that comes from a higher altitude would generate higher velocity! I know thermodynamics is a nightmare for all of us ;)
But the point here is that the highest potential energy (motivation) we can achieve for our to-dos is 'the intention of pleasing Allah.' Once we have this High-aspiring intention, the moment we start acting on our task, there will be an extra momentum (Barakah) associated with it, and InshaAllah, we will reach the best outcomes (from Allah SWT) in its time.
So next time you plan, approach your to-do’s with a purpose, not pressure!
What to do?
Plan your actions in your to-do list.
Set intentions to please Allah SWT for each of your tasks.
Remind yourself of your intentions, and believe you will find the momentum when you start.
Renew your intentions if you fall to lower worldly intentions.
convert every to-do into an act of serving our Lord (the true purpose of this life!)
