Humans are in a constant race in this world.
We strive to buy and acquire more, even when we already have enough. A new phone is released, and we rush to purchase it—not because we truly need its features, but simply because it’s new.
Allah (SWT) says:
"Competition for more diverts you, until you end up in your graves."
(Surah At-Takathur 102:1–2)
Are we living each day as if we are settling permanently in this world?
If so, it’s time to pause and reflect: What is the true reality?
Allah (SWT) reminds us:
"…Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:156)
The truth is, every soul on this earth is on a journey—marching towards Allah (SWT).
We will all meet Him, either in a state that pleases Him or in a state that does not.
When we recognize that life is a journey, we seek our destination. And once we know our destination, we start thinking deeply about the purpose of the journey.
Imagine someone asking you to live in an airport for your entire life. All your needs are provided, but you're never allowed to board a flight. You watch people come and go. Eventually, you'd feel lost and think:
“How can I be part of the journey too? And where should I go?” because everyone here is on a journey!
Likewise, once we realize this world is only a temporary stop—not the final destination—true peace doesn’t come from what we own, but from who we become on this path.
So what do we need in this life to make the most of the journey, remain our best, and succeed in reaching our destination, with Allah (SWT) pleased with us?
Taqwa.
But what is Taqwa?
It was reported that Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) once asked Ubayy ibn Ka’b (RA) about the meaning of taqwa.
Ubayy responded, “Have you ever walked on a path with thorns?”
Umar said, “Yes.”
Ubayy asked, “What did you do?”
Umar replied, “I rolled up my sleeves and took caution.”
Then Ubayy said, That is taqwa, to protect oneself from sin through life's dangerous journey so that one can successfully complete the journey unscathed by sin.”
This world is not neutral. It pulls us in many directions, many of which lead us away from Allah (SWT). That’s why being mindful of Allah in everything you do is the key to living your best in this world and succeeding in the next.
As believers, we should strive for excellence in every role we undertake—whether as a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, professional, or friend—but with an akhirah mindset. In each role, ask yourself: How can I serve my Lord through this? This will bring Barakah into each of these roles. This not only brings fulfillment and balance in our worldly roles but also helps us remain content and purposeful on this short journey toward our eternal life in the Akhirah.
May Allah SWT guide us to remain steadfast in this journey across our life roles, and meet Him when He is pleased with us.
Sincere Duáas
