How "Intention'' will help you get rid of your biggest addiction!
In today's era of social media and reliance on our mobile phones for almost everything, it's easy to become distracted and spend excessive amounts of time on our phones without achieving anything significant. Have you ever intended to check your phone for a moment, only to realize you've spent hours on it without even realizing it? If so, keep reading.
None of us likes to waste our precious time and get delayed with our important tasks. When it comes to controlling our addiction to the online world, we say and hear that it is not easy! What should we do about it? Disconnect!
Why is that difficult? Our brain favors tasks that require less new effort, promotes dopamine tasks, and creates a cycle of repeated engagement. Therefore, you must be disciplined and conscious enough to act against this and hit the ‘disconnect’ button. Now you know why it is difficult to do.
At the same time, I would say that a Muslim (one who submitted to God) is in a better position to overcome this difficulty. The routine of 'disconnecting' is a prophetic one, and Allah has blessed us with Islam to incorporate it into our lives in this world so that we can connect with its true purpose. In our daily lives, we 'disconnect' at least five times through prayers. Once a year, we 'disconnect' through fasting for a month during Ramadan. We 'disconnect' from our wealth through charity. At least once in a lifetime, we 'disconnect' from this world through Hajj. In each of these acts, we ‘reconnect’ to Allah SWT.
Alhamdulillah (All praise and thanks be to God), this helped me hit the ‘disconnect’ button with a higher intention of focusing on my important tasks, for the sake of Allah. Sure, this will work for you as well, in Sha Allah.
What to do
1. Plan your most important tasks for the day.
2. Set your focus sessions (60-90 minutes) for these tasks in your day.
3. During these sessions, fully disconnect from your social media and notifications.
4. While disconnecting, set an intention that you are following a prophetic routine and doing it for the sake of Allah to complete your tasks.
5. Feel that you are serving Allah at work/life by disconnecting from distractions.
Bonus: Do you have a vision as a means to serve Allah in this world, connecting your unique skills to the world's needs? Embracing this concept will make you even stronger and help you disconnect!
