Do you delay tasks even when you know they are important? Do you struggle to get started on your important tasks at the best time of your day? Do you fail to keep the momentum of your tasks? Do you see things start overloading and overlapping with multiple deadlines? Yes, you procrastinate!
Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing tasks, often unnecessarily or habitually, despite knowing there may be negative consequences. If you procrastinate, you may put off starting or finishing tasks in favor of doing less important, easier, or more enjoyable activities.
According to research (Steel, P. (2007)), procrastination affects some 80% of students and 20% of adults and is widespread. With the rise of the digital age, social media, and global crisis, these numbers are higher, and the trend continues. More people find it difficult to focus on complex and long-term tasks, and instead, they find short-term gratification with digital distractions and easier tasks.
Allah SWT commands us to take advantage of this life, serve him at our best, find a balance in our roles, and fulfil our responsibilities.
‘By Time. Verily Man is in loss, except such as have faith and do good deeds, and in the mutual teaching of truth, of patience and constancy.’
(Surah Al Asr)
Allah reminds us that this life is fleeting and emphasizes the importance of seizing each moment before we return to Him.
Allah says in Surah Al-Mu'minun
When death approaches any of them, they cry, “My Lord! Let me go back,
so I may do good in what I left behind.” Never! It is only a useless appeal they make. And there is a barrier behind them until the Day they are resurrected.
(Chapter 23, Verse 99-100)
Subhanallah, Imagine us in that situation! May Allah Protect and guide us to make the best use of our time in this world.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised us to take advantage of our good times before they disappear.
Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth before you become old, your health before you fall sick, your wealth before you become poor, your free time before you become busy, and your life before your death. (Al-Bukhari)
I remind myself and each of you that our time is an asset that must be spent for good in this world. It is a trust and opportunity to use in serving Allah at our best, fulfilling our responsibilities, and leading a life of purpose.
On the other hand, procrastination eventually leads to stress, overwhelm, burnout, guilt, and the list goes on. The bottom line is that it makes your mind feel uneasy. You start feeling guilty for not fulfilling your responsibilities. You feel less in control but more controlled by external factors like deadlines, your boss, and others. Moreover, you would find it challenging to maintain your spiritual responsibilities and find peace within us while doing them.
